“No, Sabrina don’t go!”
Memini’s voice was beseeching, almost hysterical as he watched Sabrina get up. What was she saying? Why was she leaving? Was she abandoning him too?
Nothing which existed as a memento of his past had ever been precious to him yet…yet…Sabrina wasn’t just something, she was someone. He was determined not to lose her too. After all, hadn’t he already lost enough? Motivated by his irrational fear of being forsaken, Memini half-lunged at Sabrina, wrapping his arms around her waist in a firm yet gentle embrace.
Under normal circumstances the gesture would have been almost romantic but in this instance Memini’s significantly shorter stature would have given that sort of scene a far too comical effect. Additionally, there was the possibility that neither of the two considered each other as more than just ‘brother and sister’. Indeed, this current scenario was more akin to that of a younger brother hugging his older sister.
“Please, don’t leave me!”
Wasn’t there something familiar about this picture? Hadn’t it occurred before? Memini was almost certain he could remember the pattering of rain from that day too. On that occasion, the duo had had some animated debate on a subject he could no longer recall…well the consequence of Memini’s obstinacy had been that Sabrina had departed in a rage. Of course, the former Memini had actually possessed the decency to swiftly admit to being at fault and he had charged out the entrance after Sabrina’s retreating silhouette. Stumbling through the rain, he had tripped, collapsing at Sabrina’s feet and clinging to her in a frantic attempt to prevent her from leaving.
As Memini’s contemplations returned to the present he suddenly realized with a shock just what he was doing. However, despite this he opted to feign oblivion, not wanting to let go. There was something indescribably comforting in this sort of contact…in holding another human being. He didn’t really have the volition to release Sabrina…at least not yet. “Sabrina, please don’t leave. There’s no allure in slum life. Why not stay here, with me?” Ack, he hadn’t intended to sound like such a pervert, quickly correcting his mistake, Memini said, “I mean…you can stay in one of the guest suites on this level. They’re all self-contained, basically like an apartment, and each room has a separate lock and key so security, privacy, etcetera, aren’t an issue at all!”

Sabrina had been turned away from him when he begged her not to go. Before she had time to turn back to him, she felt his arms wrap around her like a vise. She was shocked at first, because she hadn't gotten hugged by anyone for a long time. So at first she just stared at him with her eyes open wide in surprise. Then she finally realized what was going on, her first instinct was to pull away.
“Please, don’t leave me!”
She looked down at him and slowly wrapped her arms around him. "Oh, Memini," she said quietly. "It's okay, I won't leave you." She didn't feel like it was very awkward. She also saw him as a younger brother, and not like a romantic interest at all.
In fact, she felt it comforting as well. As much as she hated to show it, the recent change in lifestyle had been harder on her than she let on. She sighed quietly and closed her eyes with an expression of happiness.
That is, until he asked if she wanted to stay with him. She looked down at him in confusion. She couldn't imagine sharing a space with Memini. Then he went on to say that each room was like it's own apartment.
She frowned a little and looked away from him. "Memini, I can't be a burden to you... And I don't want to be a charity case." She separated from him and sighed. The idea was tempting, though. But she wasn't about to become a mooch off her oldest friend like that, even if he did want her to.

As Sabrina disentangled herself from his arms Memini released a sigh of disappointment. If only the moment had lasted longer. The unfamiliar sensation had made him wonder if either of his parents had even shown their affection towards him. Probably not, otherwise why would it seem like such a new experience?
"Memini, I can't be a burden to you... And I don't want to be a charity case."
Blinking, Memini glanced up at Sabrina, wondering if this was her implicit way of rejecting him. No, it couldn’t be. Hadn’t she understood he needed her? He trusted her assurance that everything was going to be okay and that she wouldn’t abandon him like everyone else…yet on some odd whim he wanted Sabrina to physically remain by his side as well. You know, just as an additional guarantee that she was safe and happy too.
In truth, Sabrina’s unexpected advent had sent all his suppressed childhood emotions flooding back; it was almost too much to process at once. Even though his past memories were still nonexistent Memini now comprehended just what sort of relationship they had once shared. Her role was virtually that of an older sister, the only family he had left. He couldn’t just leave her to some abhorrent life in the slums amongst random destitute denizens.
“You wouldn’t be a charity case, Sabrina.” Memini stated softly, gazing hopefully at her, “You’re practically my older sister. It’s only natural for siblings to remain together. If you’re concerned about your parents they are welcome to take up residence in an adjacent guest suite. Furthermore, since you’ve already been introduced to Tami she could be your personal maid. In my honest opinion I’ve almost certainly been more of a burden to you than you will ever be to me. Come on Sabrina, siblings support each other and…I need you.”
At this last confession, Memini blushed, inclining his head away from her in embarrassment. Nonetheless, it was the truth. “Besides…the ebony mare that I believe you named is still on our property…she won’t answer to me no matter what appellation I assign to her. Yet I can’t see to recall the name you gave her. I’m sure that if you stayed here for the interim until your father’s business picked up I wouldn’t be the only exuberant one. Come on, Sabrina. It’ll be more selfish of you to reject than it would be for you to accept.” Memini had resolved not to give up until he had convinced her.

Sabrina looked down at him sadly. She'd had no idea that he saw them as being so close. She had always thought about them as siblings, too, but she didn't know that Memini needed her so badly. And now she felt terrible for everything - the way she'd been so dissapointed in him with the incident of the man trying to rob them, giving him up to the police, and rejecting his offer to give her a place to live. So far, she hadn't been a very good older sister.
Sighing, she hugged him back and smiled a little. "Oh, Memini, I'm so grateful," she said quietly. "I would love to come stay with you." She let him go from the hug and smiled. "But as soon as we become a bother, you make sure you let me know, okay?"
She took a step back, though still smiled. "I need you, too, Memini," she told him softly. "I was so lonely when I wasn't with you." She hoped that he didn't take that as a romantic statement. She missed him as a friend, yes, but she could never see the two of them together as a couple. He was too much like a brother.
"You still have Dally?" she asked excitedly. "I loved that horse!" She hadn't even remembered the horse until Memini mentioned her. Now she had to see the mare without hesitation. It had been years since she'd seen her last. She walked out the front door and waited for him to follow.

“So the name’s Dally?” Memini muttered to himself, noting down the name for future reference as he pranced off after Sabrina. Strolling along beside her Memini was tempted to reach for her hand yet…such action could potentially be too pretentious…after all they weren’t exactly related by blood. Smirking, Memini decided to race ahead, swerving around the side of the mansion and continuing on until he arrived at the stables.
In times of prosperity, the estate had housed up to ten equines yet in this current era of depression only three remained at the main house…well…two and a half since the petite foal didn’t really count. Waltzing up to the fence which encircled the lesser enclosure, Memini hopped up onto the wooden railing in an attempt to increase his height. “Nameless!” he called, whereupon a majestic black stallion hearkened to his voice and trotted up, nudging his face with his muzzle in a display of affection.
Laughing, Memini directed his attention to the mare. “Dally,” the mare remained nonresponsive “Dally!” He tried again; there was a reaction this time, a whiny as if to say ‘get lost’ before the mare turned her back. Well, that at least confirmed that the name was, in fact, Dally.
“I guess that verifies my suspicions that the mare just doesn’t like you.”
Startled, Memini fell backwards into the arms of Adrasteia Moirae who had stealthily approached from behind him. Glaring up at the imposing and abnormally tall figure of his butler Memini was on the verge of voicing his complaints when he witnessed Sabrina’s figure come into view.
“Hello, milady. It sure has been a while. How have you been?” Replacing Memini in his former position on the fence, the butler turned and gave a respectful bow. “If you’re here for the horses I’ll notify the stable hand so he can get the equipment ready.”

Sabrina laughed and did her best to run after him. However, the full length dress made that difficult, so she was significantly slower than he was. When she arrived, Memini's butler had already beaten her there.
She smiled and walked up toward them. "Hello, Adrasteia," Sabrina said pleasantly. She bowed her head respectively toward him also. Even though he was a mere butler, he always seemed much more respectable and proud than one.
She stepped up to the fence and smiled at Memini. "So who's this?" she asked, looking at the stallion who was nuzzling him affectionately. At the sound of her voice, the ebony female picked up her head and looked over at her.
"Oh, Dally, sweetheart!" Sabrina said. The mare trotted over to her and snorted excitedly. "So you do remember me, huh, girl?" She reached up and rubbed the horse's nose gently. The horse looked happy to see her, even though it had been a long time since they'd seen each other.
She looked back at Adrasteia, then down at the designer dress she'd borrowed from Memini. "Oh, perhaps I shouldn't go for a ride until I change. I wouldn't want to ruin this dress." She smiled as the horse whinnied and stamped the ground with her front hoof.

“Certainly, milady. Allow me to notify the stable hand so that he may prepare the necessary apparel you require.” Retreating from view within the stables, Adrasteia left Memini and Sabrina to their own devices. However, as soon as Memini opened his mouth to answer Sabrina’s inquiry (concerning Nameless his prized stallion) Adrasteia had reappeared once more with a rather disapproving expression directed at Memini.
Sighing, Adrasteia shook his head, “Milady, you have my sincere apologies for this inconvenience yet unfortunately it appears that we do not currently possess the gear suitable for a lady of your stature. Of course, I should have suspected as much since our young master’s aversion to society means that we often entertain guests on these premises and as such don’t have any appropriate riding gear of an alternate size such as your own. Regrettably, Memini’s SHORT height means none of his riding paraphernalia would fit.”
‘Short’. That single adjective had an instantaneous effect on Memini who blushed a bright pink, flinching as if the word had actually stabbed him. Unmistakably, Adrasteia had definitely applied excessive emphasis on ‘short’ for the sole purpose of provoking him and drawing Sabrina’s attention to his diminutive size. Oh how humiliating. That wicked freak! Did he revel in causing Memini such grief? Glaring at his butler, Memini retorted, “Well? Can’t you just go and buy it now? Don’t blame me for your lack of foresight in dealing with this situation. Hmph!”
“Well, I admit that I indeed hadn’t predicted that you would suddenly develop such a liking to your visitor. It didn’t cross my mind for a second that you would abandon your antisocial ways so soon for anyone. Especially since just a few days ago you were saying-“
“Hey! Shut. Up.” Memini demanded, glaring at Adrasteia’s snide smile. He shuddered to think how Sabrina would react if Adrasteia were to disclose that Memini had insulted her even before that regrettable visit to her house.
Adrasteia shrugged, “Well, at any rate I currently have my hands full with organizing everything so that Sabrina’s parents will feel comfortable once they arrive on the estate. I’ll have to instruct the chauffeur to make a number of trips to retrieve both them and their belongings. Additionally, there are specific things which I must personally attend to in order to insure everything is done efficiently. Since it’s already evening that means I won’t have time to run any errands for you. To occupy your time, why don’t you request Sabrina’s help with that jigsaw puzzle you were working on earlier, since you obviously lack the intelligence to complete it on your own?”
So that was it…that chaotic mess of pieces randomly flicked all around the entire study had been the culprit that had made Adrasteia so irked. No doubt he had spent a considerable amount of time locating them and ascertaining that all 5000 pieces were accounted for. Well…Memini was just glad Adrasteia would be too busy the rest of the day to punish him further.
{Hey Wolfy, I think we should just end it here so that you won't have to worry about replies on your vacation trip. ^_^ We can discuss the setting of where the next part will take place after you get back. We'll probably do a time skip of a few days or a week. xD}
