When Charlie departed from their apartment one morning, he didn’t think anything out of the ordinary would happen that day. He was going to go down to one of the hidden casinos or bars, have a good time, and then head right back. This wasn’t a rare occurrence for him, even though he was supposed to be the ‘caring and respectable’ father for Robin - which is why he said he was doing errands, and that she should wait for him back at home.
But today, Robin got curious and decided to follow her father down to his ‘errands’. Unknowingly, Charlie led her down to the casino, where he planned to double their money that they’d gotten from scams the previous day. He stepped into the abandoned-looking building through an alley entrance. Thinking that was extremely bizarre, Robin followed closely.
Going up to the Craps table, Charlie placed his bet on his lucky number. Then he rolled the dice. Cheers erupted around the whole table. He was about to roll again, but he felt a small tug on the back of his shirt. Turning his head, Charlie realized in shock that Robin was right next to him. He dropped the dice on the table in shock. Giving her a quick glare, he turned back to the game and looked down to see that he’d just lost all his money.
“Didn’t I tell you to stay home?” he asked, now on their way home. “We’ll have to make up all of that money, now!” He was so mad, even though it was his fault in the first place. They relied completely off their ability to con people out of their money, which was getting harder and harder as time went on. People on the streets were giving him disapproving looks as they passed.
Shutting his mouth with a slight growl, he decided to put on the act that everything was fine between them. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and hurried her back to the apartment to get out of the streets.

███ KONA NOELLE
(WARNING: mild violence and some disturbing content will follow.) Fragile, leather covered finger tips traced the lips of the man beneath them, black hair tickled his cheeks, and ice-blue eyes reflected the eyes of the man below in a disconcerting manner. He was still warm and his blood was staining her skin. She remained perched atop his chest watching, waiting for his eyes to go still. She could feel him asphyxiating, drowning from his own blood pooling in his throat. Little rivulets of tears meandered through the wrinkles and folds of his middle-aged skin. Despite what the scene may imply, the moment was precious. Two monstrous creatures exchanging their lives through their eyes in the fleeting moments of one's ending life. She saw the beauty in his eyes as the life slowly seeped from them. She tilted her head back in a moment of ecstasy as she inhaled the overwhelming scent of his blood. Her eyelashes pressed lightly against each for a moment, before parting as two lovers being torn away from another. Blue-white irises rolled aimlessly to the left before she limply rose from atop the corpse. Blood dripped down the barrel of her M1911, .45 Caliber semi-automatic. Ironic as it might be, corpses were not her thing. She stepped away from the messy scene. Her boots smacked the pavement as she began her way back to the brothel. She didn't have any particular desire to live in a brothel. She had no plans to complain, though. It was a roof above her head, and she had an entire floor to herself. Her room was tucked away in a relatively quite corner of the upper level. Her floor received only mild traffic from Daddy's costumers. Another thing she didn't particularly desire was calling Tommy "Daddy", but he insisted. She only ever called him "Father" and only when she was to his face. It certainly angered him, but given the situations surrounding Kona, he was patient. She would come around with time, or, he believed she would. She slid her leather gloves from her fingers and made her way toward her bathroom. The cold water fell on her head like lead, and she could feel an inner churning in her stomach. She trembled and slid to her knees. Kona's eyes widen and she threw her hands over her mouth as she choked back her bile. As stated before, corpses were not her thing. She had stayed just a bit too long and was feeling rather ill now. She finished her shower with haste and moved quickly to redress herself and remove herself from the area. Tommy had given her the rest of the day off for being such a "good girl" lately. She stomped down the metal stairs of the brothel rushing past Tommy's other "daughters". Several of them made rude comments, others giggled about how she looked green, but that wasn't any concern to her. She pushed the heavy metal doors and stepped out and took in a breath of relatively fresh air. After regaining control of her stomach, she made her way downtown. Even with the day off, she was planning to gather information for Tommy. She slipped down an alley and stepped into the casino, though she noted its poor security. She rolled her eyes, practically anyone could have gotten past the security here. Even a child! As her eyes refocused, Kona jumped. She watched as a tiny girl walked toward one of the gambling stations. Her mouth dropped slowly. She hadn't been serious! She walked after the girl having to push her way through small crowds before finally seeing the girl headed in the other direction. With a grunt, Kona followed suit. As she exited the casino, she saw the girl was with someone. A man, who was probably closer to her own age than not, had his arm around the girl an appeared to be scolding her. Excuse you, if anyone should be scolded it's you. Who the hell brings a kid to a casino? Her bright eyes narrowed. "The hell you think you're doing, creep!" She placed her hands on her hips, accentuating her tiny waist. Though, in fact, most of her was fairly tiny. Her features, her bust, and herself as a general whole. Her face held a feisty expression. "Huh?" She cocked a single, black brow. notes: finished. tags: charlie & robin. word count: 715. notes: it's a terrible first post. i apologize. D:

Charlie had been just about to strike Robin for her stupidity when he heard a voice from behind them. He turned, a fiery look behind his copper-brown eyes. “Excuse me?” he asked, his lip curling up slightly as he spoke, giving him a resemblance to a furious animal. He stopped and nudged Robin behind his back. Just in case.
This wouldn’t be the first time he’d had to deal with a disgruntled former chump that he’d pulled a scam on. He didn’t recognize her, though he was usually able to remember faces. But, why else would anyone care about how he treated Robin? Especially someone who’d just come out of an underground casino.
“What do you think YOU are doing?” he snapped back. “This is my daughter, girl, and I don’t need to be told off by someone like you! And you were in that casino, too! I’m sure that I saw you in there somewhere.” From behind his back, there was the tiniest of peeps that came from the little girl.
“Daddy, let’s just go,” she said, like a whimpering puppy. She hated it when he yelled, even if it wasn’t being directed at her. “I’m real sorry…” Charlie barely gave her a glance before glaring back at Kona as he decided whether or not to listen to Robin, or to drag out the argument like he wanted to.

Pursing her lips, her icy eyes narrowed on the smaller figure before her. She cocked her head and took in the full image of the child. Someone like her? Did he even know her? Her eyes, wild and rapid, flicked to his. She took several slow, deliberate steps forward. Like me? Like a monster. She stopped several inches from the man before squatting down to the girl's height. Clearly, the little thing was afraid. But of who? Kona? Or her father? She lifted her index finger and lightly poked the little girl's nose. We could kill him. She arched a single, black brow. If he scares you, we could kill him. Or is it me? Am I the one who scares you? Within seconds, her eyes were wide with apologies in every hue of blue. Her smile earnest and loving. She had, in an instant, become incredibly angelic. Her bangs blew across her cheeks. Would you kill her? A light and airy giggle escaped her lips and her eyes closed as her smile grew. Could you kill a child? Are you that demonic? "I won't hurt you. Pinky promise." She offered the tiny girl her pinky finger in the ultimate cross-my-heart-or-hope-to-die promise. "I hope I haven't scared you." She brushed her hair aside and glanced up at her father. "What do you say we asked your daddy if I could treat us to some ice cream? I haven't had any in a very long, and I'd really like some. Maybe even with sprinkles?" She wanted to know. Could she kill her? With an internal sigh, Kona rose. "I didn't realize she was your daughter. I'm sorry." Her soft demeanor matched with her embarrassed smile masked her thoughts perfectly. "I'd really like to treat you both. It's no problem at all, especially after upsetting you both so greatly. Not knowing exactly what to do with the stranger’s pinkie when it was held out to her, she just poked it with her own, tiny pinkie finger. Since her father and her were constantly moving around, she’d never been in one place long enough to make any good friends – especially because she didn’t attend elementary school with many of the other kids her age.
But, when Kona mentioned ice cream, her eyes lit up. Charlie frowned a little, looking over Kona carefully. Something about her still seemed off. But Robin, who now had a huge smile on her face, looked up at her father pleadingly. “Can we daddy? Please,” she practically begged in her quiet British accented voice.
With one last minute to look at the stranger, Charlie grudgingly agreed. “Alright, alright,” he said, patting the little girl on her head. How often was it that a complete stranger offered to give you and your kid a treat like that, anyway? And it was free, after all… And anyone offering to give away free stuff in times like these can’t be bad, right?
Taking Robin’s hand, he started down the sidewalk. “Charlie Harrison,” he said to Kona. “And this is Robin. Who are you?” He put on a smile, so as not to make Kona think that he was anxious about her when his eight-year-old daughter wasn’t scared at all.

Her eyes slid over to their corners as her lids narrowed on Charlie. With a sigh, she spoke. "Kona." She lowered her head causing her bangs to cascade across her face. The bright, icy slits watched as the child walked on. She mused. Her eyes widening and rapidly moving to and fro as she took in everything about the child. Carefully spending only several seconds doing so before adjusting her hair, the girl's father was apprehensive. We could kill him, Robin. Has he wronged you? We could kill. Tell her, Kona. Tell her we could kill him. The corners of her gave a subtle twitch. "Kona Noelle." Her adrenaline was pumping and the blood rushing through her veins. Quite truthfully, she was a frail, brittle, little thing. The human mind could only be stretched so far before loosing its elasticity. She began hearing voices at a young age. It began has just one very loud, very angry voice. Then it multiplied. Giggles, screams, whispers, she heard voices even in her sleep. They never ceased. She isn't particularly sure which voice is her own. Though, she knew which voices weren't and she knew she wanted them to stop. "Robin, which flavor would you like? Her voice was cheerful, and her smile warm. She could she the small ice cream parlor on the edge of the street corner. She would have offered to race, but her gun was only concealed by thin layers of lace. She dressed rather controversially. The material covering her legs was tight, and short. Hanging low across her hips was a thick belt, it contained pouches and pockets. Mostly importantly, hanging from the belt's right side was a long curtain of lace. Its edges tattered from dragging across the earth beneath her, and it danced about her right leg in the gentle winds. Her top was even more concerning. It was a fitted corset trimmed with lace. While she resided in the slums, not many questioned her, but when she came into town she received many horrified faces. She loved the feel of lace against her skin. Its gentle touch could send shivers down her spine and goosebumps across her fair skin. Though, she often found it difficult to wash blood from her lace adornments. She could sleep in sheets of lace and satin. It reminded her of her mother. "And you....Charlie?" She giggled as she looked over at him. "I think you're rather vanilla." She stuck out her tongue with another giggle as she teased him. She didn't like vanilla. She found it to be boring and plain. "Possibly, chocolate." She mused with a silly face. "Strawberry? No, no, no. I don't see Charlie as one liking pink. Do you, Robin?"notes: finished. tags: charlie & robin. word count: ---. notes: laaaate x____x.

Charlie tugged on Robin’s hand just slightly when Robin took in the way Kona was dressed. He didn’t want her to take anything from the strange girl in terms of how inappropriate her apparel was. “Kona?” he said, seeing if he’d gotten her name right. “Interesting name. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard it before. Family name?”
He looked back at her, about to say something more when he noticed her expression. Being a con-artist, Charlie had a real knack for sizing people up. Kona seemed excited about something. But what could she possibly be getting so worked up about? Sure, he liked ice cream, too, but she looked as if she was ready to start running around in circles.
He was stolen away from his thoughts, however, when Kona asked Robin about what her favorite flavor was. Her mouth opened, as if she was going to answer instantly, before she closed it again to think. She didn’t want to mess this up; she had no idea when she would get this opportunity again. It was very serious indeed.
“Vanilla?” asked Charlie, giving Kona a look. “What do you mean by that?” He followed after her, letting go of Robin’s hand. “Are you implying that I’m boring?” If she only knew what he did every day, them she wouldn’t think of him as boring. He followed Robin, who had jogged ahead toward the ice cream parlor.
“Pink?” asked the little girl, stopping and turning to Charlie and Kona. She scoffed, imagining her father dressed in pink. The thought made her giggle. She added a pink bonnet on top, which just made her laugh more. She had to spit out, “No! But I like pink!” through chuckles.
Charlie just sighed and stepped into the little, sweet-smelling shop. “Okay, then,” he said. This had better not ruin Robin for scamming, he thought bitterly. If she’s too giggly and girly, she might not keep a straight face. Of course he didn’t realize that Robin was just being a normal kid – she had always been his little partner in crime, after all.
“I’ll have a chocolate,” he said with a sigh to the man behind the freezer counter. “And my daughter will have the strawberry. Thanks.” He stepped back, letting Kona ahead of him. His eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at her.

███ KONA NOELLE
She stepped into the shop and took a look at their selection. She pressed her lips into a thin line as her eyes grew wide and childish. She walked by Charlie pretending to be naive to his beady little eyes staring at her. She tapped her finger on her lips and rocked back and forth on her heels. This was a difficult decision. She tapped her foot as her brows furrowed. She seemed rather distressed in needing to pick a flavor. Just as Kona seemed to be getting wound tighter and tighter by the intensity of the situation, she sprung. Her entire body became animated. She leaped forward leaning on the counter with the biggest grin on her face. Her leg kicked back and popped up as if she had just been kissed. Her bright eyes gleamed and glittered with joy. She had chosen! The momentousness time had come! Finally! Finally it was here! And she choose! "Vanilla, with sprinkles please." She turned to Charlie with a grin and couple of giggles. "Just plain, old, boring, washed-out, dull vanilla." She gave Charlie a cheeky grin. "But of course, everything changes once you had sprinkles." She pointed at herself and winked before stepping away from the counter. She walked over to Charlie with her hands behind her back before standing next to him. She rocked on her heels before leaning forward and turning her face up toward him. "Do you like sprinkles?" She gave him her sassiest grin yet. "I bet Robin does, don't ya Robin? You can go ahead and get as many topings as ya want." She gave Robin a little wink before looking at Charlie. "Chocolate sauce. You are most defiantly a chocolate sauce man. Predictable. No sprinkles, far too enthusiastic and enjoyable for you." She gave a nod of certainty. "Though, chocolate sauce, my friend, can get a little dirty." This time, as she looked at Charlie, it was with skepticism.

Sighing, Charlie looked down at his watch. How long was she going to just stand there before she finally chose? It was just ice cream after all! Suddenly, however, she sprang up like she’d just been prodded with a needle. Is that it? Is she crazy? he thought to himself. Robin stared at her, her eyes narrowed in confusion and puzzlement.
The little girl recovered soon, however, to go pick out her toppings. Once she seemed occupied enough with that task, Charlie turned and grabbed Kona by the arm. “What is the matter with you?” he demanded in a soft, yet threatening voice. “Are you mad?” As she continued with her analogy, his face curled up in disgust. “You’re sick in the head,” he continued. “We’re lea-”
“Daddy, do you want any toppings?” Robin peeped up from the counter. He instantly dropped Kona’s arm. Putting on the most genuine smile, Charlie strode over to her. “No thank you, sweetheart,” he said in a calm voice. It was remarkable how deceiving he could be and how he could trick his own daughter, who was also a scammer.
He did want to leave, but Robin seemed to like the strange woman, he couldn’t openly show his distrust. If Robin got mad at him, how many scams could he pull off? No, no, it was best to keep her happy. “Wow, honey, that looks delicious,” he said, sounding like the kindest and happiest man alive. Wrapping an arm around her, he got his ice cream and went to go sit down at one of the circular tables inside the shop.

Her composure remained calm. There was very little one could do to rattle this girl's cage. She watched with a dull expression as Charlie began engaging with his daughter. Her opinion of Charlie certainly had not been helped though. Kona took her ice cream and lazily licked the sprinkles from the dessert. "Mm, that looks yummy, Robin." She squatted down so she was eye level with Robin. "I wonder, when I was a little girl, I had a special doll that went with me everywhere. What if I got you one? From those big toy stores? Would you like that?"Her hair bounced as she turned her head to Charlie. She smiled sweetly. "Would that be alright?" She could sense an artificiality about him. His life useless. Most lives were useless. Even her own. As that thought began to grow inside of her head, her smile seemed to diminish. In the larger scheme of it all, she was only a cloud of dust that blew across the earth. Her eyes fell to the side and lost their sense of life. She lived only for the fulfillment of a vendetta. Her hair fell across her face and she absentmindedly brushed her hair behind her ear. When she was still, she was quite pretty. Her eyes exotic, her skin like porcelain, and her hair dark like ebony. She was beautiful, but ghostly and strikingly eerie. Her long eye lashes accented her cool colored hues and her arched brows gave her an even more feminine touch. The gentle slope of her nose and her full lips were perfectly fitted to her small face. Her tiny, toned frame gave her a sense of agility and grace. Much like her mother, she appeared in some sense regal. Though, this only came out in Kona when she sat still. She was like a wild, raving stallion. She caused a torrent of chaos and so she looked wildly mad. But, when she was still, there was a real beauty about her. A moment where one could develop an appreciation for her unbroken spirit. Unfortunately for Kona, most only paid attention to the fact that she was a mild train wreck. Her eyes moved toward Charlie, and for the first she really appeared harmless. Her eyes wide with an innocent curiosity. Her vanilla ice cream dripped onto her shoes, but she either didn't care or hadn't noticing. Am I insane? She giggled filling her eyes back up with a brilliant, joyful gleam. Kona was childlike. Her emotions came easily to her face. Her eyes always gave her away. She could lie and lie, but her eyes just couldn't seem to keep up.

Charlie’s uncertain expression only got a begging look from Robin. Her big, innocent, crystal blue eyes looked up at him pleadingly. Her hands were folded like she was praying. “Daddy, please?” she asked. She’d always envied the dolls in the windows of those big toy stores. She didn’t want one of the giant expensive ones, but a small one would be great when she was alone or scared at night.
Reluctantly, Charlie let out a sigh and looked up at Kona. “Alright, but then we must really be going home,” he said. “We really appreciate your… generosity.” After Robin had finished her ice cream, he led them all to the toy store that was just down the street. The store was huge. Huge shelves were lined with stuffed animals, soft dolls, and plastic figures.
On the floor, there were dollhouses, and big playhouses resembling castles, old homes, and farmhouses. Bookshelves surrounded a little corner of the store, with miniature furniture for kids to sit on. In the other corners, there were little doctor kits, train sets, and other little toys. He followed Robin, who saw a doll she liked, until he passed the little bookshelves.
A book on top of the shelf bore a striking resemblance to the town that he grew up in. He picked up the book and began to look through it while Robin walked ahead with Kona. Just as he finished looking at all the pictures, he heard the bell ring from the door. “I think he went in here,” said an old, raspy voice. He turned and saw a familiar face, flanked on both sides by policemen.
He’d seen the man once before – he’d pulled a scam on him, but he’d caught on and tried to turn them in – fortunately nobody on the sidewalk believed him, but the cops must have thought differently. Before they saw him, he ducked into one of the playhouses. He looked over sadly at Robin. He couldn’t retrieve her without escaping himself. They would see him, and also know that she was an accomplice.
He couldn’t get caught, what would happen to her if he wasn’t there? Or worse, she could get arrested herself. But he hated to leave her alone with Kona, though he really didn’t have a choice. So, growling under his breath, he stealthily made his way back to escape through the side door.
Robin, meanwhile, hadn’t even noticed her father’s absence. She had a doll in her hands with button eyes and hair made of yarn. A happy smile was sewn onto her face, and she was wearing a blue, plaid dress. “Could I have this one, Miss Kona?” she asked sweetly.

███ KONA NOELLE
She chewed her lip for a minute. She found herself surrounded by shelves upon shelves of teddy bears. There was a small little girl inside her screaming to get one. However, the adult assassin told her that was preposterous. Though, teddy bears could be assassins too, yes? She picked one from the shelf and examined its build. A lot of fluff, but no muscle. A small frown began to present itself on her face. How would the little thing hold any weapons? She placed the bear deciding she ought not by anything she could develop an attachment to. Attachments were weaknesses. Kona turned away from the bears and noticed Charlie with a book. She remembered stealing a book once. It was a fragile, aged, and stiff from years and years of use. It was difficult to read, especially for a child who never had any more than a few years of formal schooling. Father did not approve of stealing. So, he began buying her children's books so she could teach herself to read at an appropriate pace. Kona sighed and started toward Robin. She seemed nearly through with her selection. It was then she felt something in her gut. She furrowed her brows and was about to turn back toward Charlie, but little Robin had already reached her. "Mm? Of course." She smiled, "Let's find your da-". Her blue eyes went wide and her mouth felt slightly ajar. No. Oh, no. OH HELL NO HE DIDN'T! "Robin, where's Charlie?" She took a few steps toward the book section she had seen him, but he was gone. WHATTHEHELL! WHO LEAVES THEIR KID WITH SOMEONE THEY THINK IS INSANE!Kona stared at the spot she last saw Charlie in. "Shit." She growled and then her eyes grew wide. "Shit! Can I say shit with you here? Shit, I did it again! SHIT!" Kona pressed the palm of her hand against her forehead and took in a very, very long breath. "Okay, here, let's get your doll and go look for Charlie."She slowly opened her eyes and peered down at Robin. With a giggle, Kona tried to ease her temper. "I bet you he's playing hide and seek with us. Dirty scoundrel not cluing us in." She winked and started toward the door. "Where do you think he's hiding? Any place he really likes, hm?" She was going to kill him. She was going to press her gun right against his throat and blow his head right from his neck. She was relatively calm though. She wasn't totally alone with Robin. He had to be nearby. No, no. If she were completely alone with this kid, they'd both be screwed. Kona was no mother. She didn't even know if the thing was potty trained. Did it need a bottle? No way in hell was she breast feeding. She began chewing her lip getting more and more anxious. Could she just leave it? Like in a park or something? Kids like parks, right? Ew, what would she do if it had an accident! Kona did not deal with other people's inabilities to take care of their own bodily functions. She sighed, she couldn't leave it in a park. It was getting late. She'd be late to the brothel if she dropped the thing off. Okay, if we don't find him in an hour. She's coming back to the brothel with me.

Looking around, Robin saw the two men dressed in blue and a familiar looking face. Charlie had always taught her that policemen were bad people, out to get them. So, she nervously edged behind Kona. “Yeah, maybe he’s outside the store?” she suggested. Did they get him already? Or worse, had he abandoned her there to be taken by them?
She made her way cautiously to the desk, her doll still held tightly in her arms. Once they had bought the toy, she did just as her father had done just minutes before. Ducking behind displays of toys, she slunk to the door and snuck out to the street in such a way that they didn’t see her. Once safely outside the store, she looked at Kona.
“I don’t know where he is,” she said. Her head turned from side to side as she furiously scanned the crowd for Charlie. “I don’t know if he’s still inside with the bad people, or…” Her crystalline eyes began to shine with approaching tears. “He wouldn’t have left me with them, would he?” She blinked the tears away quickly and shook her head. “No, no…” she said quickly. “That can’t be.”
But then where was he? She certainly didn’t see him anywhere nearby. He seemed to have vanished from the toy store, even though it was only one big room, so he couldn’t have been hiding in another room. So, with a courageous look on her face, Robin decided to go towards their apartment downtown. She really hoped he was there. If he wasn’t, she didn’t have any other plans.
Meanwhile, Charlie was nowhere close to their apartment. He was hiding out in an alley, cowering between two trash cans. On both sides of the alley was parked a police car. They hadn’t cornered him on purpose – they weren’t even aware that he was there – but he still couldn’t leave until the coast was clear. If they saw him, he’d be arrested on the spot!
Charlie believed that, at some point, his scamming would catch up to him, but he didn’t think it would be today. He was too young to be stuck in jail!

███ KONA NOELLE
Kona grimaced as Robin began to tear up. She didn't do tears. She hadn't for a very long time. She followed Robin. "Robin, who are the bad people?" She wasn't sure if Robin was paranoid given he way she left the store, or if there was a legitimate reason for her to worry. Honestly, she would get stuck with a kid who had creeps coming after her. Fantastic. The problem wasn't the bad people, it would be how Kona would handle the bad people in front of a small, impressionable child. Nor could she assure the frightened thing. Kona couldn't outright, in the middle of the streets, announce to this kid "Oh, hey! No problems here, I'm an assassin!" Besides, she wasn't sure Robin might feel any better knowing she was alone with a stranger who was very, very, very well trained in the art of killing. She took a breath and focused. She had to keep Robin happy or something might go terribly wrong. She wasn't going to lie to Robin. It was very possible Charlie left her. From her own experience, Kona could tell her nothing better. "Robin, where's your mother?" She had been dreading to ask, but with the current situation, Kona thought she ought to suck it up and ask. Surely, this kid's mom was around somewhere, right? Right? She braced herself for the answer. Mothers were Kona's least favorite subject. Personally, she hated the question. She had heard it so many times, and every time reminded her of the answer. She swallowed hard and just hoped the answer would come quickly and bring an end to the conversation at that. As they walked, Kona kept her eyes out. She was trained to track and stalk her prey for sometime before killing them. However, she usually had information before hand. She needed something to go off of, but they were pressed for time and Kona knew nothing about Charlie or Robin. She didn't really want to know anything, but if they wanted to find Charlie, she'd have to know something, right?

Robin sniffled once, then looked up to Kona. “The bad people?” she asked in a voice that reflected her surprise. “Those two men in there! The ones in the uniforms.” She glanced back nervously and saw a police car driving past. She jumped behind Kona, practically shaking. “My daddy says that they’re out to get us, and if they see us, they’ll take us away!”
It was obvious that Charlie’s words had her completely tricked. She had no idea that the police only went after people who did illegal things. Little did she know that they didn’t go around snatching people up to take them to jail.
Once the car had passed, she cautiously edged her way out from behind Kona. The second she saw that the coast was clear, she began to hurry off to their apartment. “My mother?” she asked after Kona inquired where her mother was. “Oh, I don’t have one.” She’d seen other kids out with their mothers, but she always kind of assumed that not everybody had one.
She had no idea that her mother was still in Great Britain after being robbed by Charlie for all she had.
