James looked to his left in the passenger seat of his car. Inside a cardboard box lined with old towels sat a puppy. A little boxer puppy, a girl. She squirmed and sat up out of her box, her too big paws resting on the edges of the box. James laughed, and removed one hand from the steering wheel to rub her ears affectionately. Although he had saved the task of naming the puppy, he had already dubbed her Girly, a stupid but fitting name, as she was in fact a female. The puppy twisted her head so that she was chewing on James hand, and he laughed, pulling his hand back. She leaned forward, trying to reach it again from where it sat on the arm rest. Her weight was too much for the box, and the box was thrown forward, burying her underneath it. She yelped at the sudden darkness, and began to try and wiggle her way out. She sat up, and the box tipped precariously on her head. She yipped again, jumping around. Finally she managed to free herself, and the box tumbled to the floor. She emerged with her tongue hanging out of her mouth triumphantly, but wrapped with the towels that had been her bedding. James laughed, and pulled it off. "Silly Girly!" he laughed, and pulled the towels out. As he pulled them away, she snapped at them, getting one in her powerful jaws and tugging against James, convinced they were playing a game. He surrendered the towels, and pulled to the side of the road to fix her box, knowing she would end up peeing on his seat if he didn't.
Slapping the box back up, he offered her a treat, and while she lapped it up he pulled the towels away from her grip, adding them to her box as well. She looked up to him, expecting more treats, and he patted the box. Obediently, she hopped into it, twirling a circle as if to find the best spot before plopping herself down in the middle. Almost immediately, she closed her eyes and was asleep. James laughed quietly, and pulled back into the traffic. He drove home with one hand on the wheel, and one resting on Girly's back as it rose and fell with her breathing. Though his mind should have been on the road, he was picturing Frankie's reaction over and over. He knew what would happen- he'd ring the bell, and Jez would drop whatever she was chewing on and come running, jumping at the door as if she could push it down in order to lick her master's face. He was trying to decide whether or not he would simply bring the dog in, or ask for help with the groceries. He decided it would be simpler to just bring Girly in with him, and it would save the trip back up the stairs to the apartment. He smiled, and went back to picturing giving Frankie his gift.
Her face would be wonderfully surprised, shocked, and adored all at the same time. He smiled; he loved surprising her, because he knew she loved surprises. But this beat everything, except maybe his proposal. A puppy! James is a firm believer that everyone could use a dog- dogs were man's best friend, right? And his Jezabel was the best; though she loved Frankie, she favored James. Besides, raising your own dog was what James believed as to be something of a right of passage that Frankie had never been through. James wanted everything for his wife- especially the pleasure of having her own dog. He pulled into the parking garage of the building, and picked up sleeping Girly from her box. He cuddled her, and she licked his hand sleepily, yawning and falling back to sleep against James' chest. He shut the door with his hip, and shifted the weight of the puppy so that he could press the button of the elevator.
He came out in the hallway and fished in his pockets for his keys, extracting one and sticking it into the lock of their room. He pushed the door open. As he had expected, Jezabel was jumping, trying to get through to both the puppy and her master. She jumped up, sniffing the thing, and he pushed her away, laughing as Girly squirmed awake. He set the dog down on the couch, and pulled Jez into bathroom, locking her in to her outrage. He told her to sit and be quiet, and to his relief, she did. He whisked back into the kitchen to find...the puppy gone from site. "Shit," he muttered, and began to search, calling under his breath. "Here, puppy puppy puppy, here Girly..." He entered the kitchen to find the puppy on the floor...and Frankie above her.
