As Smile’s eyes gradually flickered open he perceived not the dim crate he was expecting but a well-furnished room adorned with picturesque paintings and elaborate décor.
Whatever he was sleeping on also had the velvety texture of…of whatever substance clouds appeared to be made from.
Speaking of which, he must have died and ascended some staircase to heaven. Such a pity, but wasn’t this just so delightfully luxurious? Languidly stretching himself out on the comfy bed, Smile yawned lazily as if he hadn’t a care in the world.
“So you’re finally conscious.”
Oh, this was certainly an unanticipated development! Rolling over, Smile gazed up at the figure of Adrasteia standing over him with an annoyed look on his face.
“Eh? You managed to get yourself killed somehow? Pity! Seems like you’re doomed to be a butler even in death now attend to my every wish I –“
That seemed to have finally snapped the butler’s patience and with a scowl the man promptly splattered the rude guest with a cup of lukewarm tea. “Ops, butter fingers.”
“Oi! You did that on purpose! What kind of heavenly butler treats the guest like this?”
“Idiot, if you haven’t noticed the blood still staining the bandage on your left eye let me point it out for you; you are not dead! Although for what reason Sabrina chose to save a scoundrel like you I can never understand I have no choice but to comply with her request. Thus, you have been permitted to take up temporary residence at the Veritas mansion whilst we decide what to do with trash like you!”
With that final insult the butler was gone, slamming the door as an additional means of making his message crystal clear. ‘You are not welcome here!’

Sabrina, who had been peacefully sleeping in a chair in the corner of the room, awoke when Adrasteia slammed the door. She looked around quickly, dazed, before her sleepy-looking eyes came across Smile. “Oh, hey,” she said tiredly. She rubbed her eyes, one at a time with her good hand, to try to make herself more alert.
She stayed where she was, on the cozy chair. “Feeling better?” she asked. “I don’t know what he did, but that old man had you knocked out…” She laid her head against the back of the chair gently. “I was really scared, Smile… Don’t do that again!” Though she sounded angry, she really just looked relieved. “But I’m glad you’re okay.”
Meanwhile, at the Matthews estate, Sabrina’s father had just finished up his interview with the police, who left a few minutes afterwards. Furious, he called over to where he was sure Sabrina was hiding, Memini Veritas’ mansion.
As the phone rang, he waited angrily, twisting the cord in his fingers. Sabrina looked over to the end table, on which a phone was sitting. She picked up and said, “Hello?” because she didn’t want the phone to keep wringing.
“SABRINA!” he bellowed. His tirade was cut short, however, because Sabrina threw the phone across the room and it unplugged itself from the wall. Now fully awake, Sabrina looked positively terror-stricken.
“Well, it looks like my situation will have gone back to how it was when he catches me,” she said. Her nerves forced a laugh or two out of her, as well as a sigh.

Under typical circumstances Smile would have been bouncing around with ecstasy at the news that Sabrina had been concerned about his welfare yet on this occasion he was being uncharacteristically remorseful. What was more, one look at the girl's exhausted appearance and shame struck him almost instantly! He was practically beleaguering himself for what he had unwittingly dragged her into!
Glancing away, the former criminal muttered, "Sabrina, I apologize for getting you involved. I think I'm beginning to realize Adrasteia is right. You shouldn't associate yourself with someone like me. All I've ever done is-"
CRASH
Already traumatized by his experience earlier that day the sight of a brick flying, suddenly and without warning, through the wide French windows (on the second floor no less) was suffice to send Smile through the roof! He practically leaped off the luxurious bed as if I had suddenly transformed into a mound of man-eating ants.
Likewise, the abrupt disruption also sent Adrasteia hurtling into the room (red-faced and furious) shouting out, "You know what, Smile? As a guest you should at least have the common sense to NOT destroy-"
However, the disheveled figure launching himself onto the balcony from a nearby tree limb was suffice to stop that particular rant in its tracks.
"Memini...I fear to ask but, what on earth are you doing?"
OoC: The quality is poor due to a massive headache. :/

Sabrina looked curiously at Smile, almost in awe of what he was saying. He was apologizing for getting her into trouble? She would never have expected that! "No, Smile -" she interrupted, but was cut short by the window next to her shattering.
A thousand thoughts rushed through her head as she screamed and covered her face. Was it the mafia after her, for revenge of rescuing Smile? Could they have found her so quickly? Or had she somehow managed to punch through another window without her conscious mind's consent? Shaking, she didn't dare uncover her eyes to see.
She'd obviously had enough with broken glass and violence. When Adrasteia burst in, yelling, she almost couldn't understand what he was saying. Was he talking to her? This made her draw her hands down so she could see.
And as she did, she saw Memini swinging in from a tree through the broken window. "Memini?" she asked quietly. "What are you doing?" She slowly got up from her chair and walked over, trying to help him up with her one good hand. "I thought you stayed at the hospital!"
Had she somehow gotten Memini into trouble with the Mafia, too? She was turning out to be the worst friend ever - first Smile, then Adrasteia, and now Memini. And who knows how much trouble her father would get in to when the press found out that she was somehow involved with a mobster. What a giant mess, and it was all her fault.

The apparent calmness he had disrupted with his unconventional entry was simply too much for the young heir to stomach! What with the trouble he had gone through escaping those two Mafia brutes he had at least entertained the hope of being able to dispose the whereabouts of Smile. Yet there the man was, comfortably propped up in bed with a multitude of cushions with ¡®only¡¯ an eye patch to show for that days misadventures!
Well he, Memini, had certainly drawn the blunt end of the stick! He simply couldn¡¯t take the fact that he had been one-upped! Charging from the room in a fit of tears, completely ignoring Sabrina¡¯s concerned inquiries, the child hurriedly blurted out, ¡°MEANIES! ALL OF YOU! I HATE YOU ALL!¡±
Of course, this outburst and subsequent speedy retreat was suffice to trouble Adrasteia and soon the butler was chasing after his young charge with worried words of ¡°Memini, what¡¯s wrong?¡± , ¡°Please, stop crying¡± and ¡°How about I make you some Cherry tea? CHERRY tea!¡±
Thus Sabrina and the sight-impaired Smile were once more left to their own devices with Smile gazing in confusion at the spattering of broken glass now littering one side of the bed. ¡°Is¡is he usually so¡melodramatic?¡± He questioned at last, gently placing a hand over his bandaged eye. It might have just been paranoia but he had the strange inkling that he wouldn¡¯t be able to see from that eye even once it healed enough for the bandage to be removed.

Puzzled at first, Sabrina stared after Memini when he ran out. But as Adrasteia chased after him, yelling about what was wrong, Sabrina felt a stab of guilt deep within her stomach. With a sigh, she began sweeping some of the broken glass out the window with her foot. As she did this, she thought about what had happened to Memini to make him so upset.
Had he followed her down while she was searching for Smile? Had the Mafia somehow found him? Was that where those guards went, and why she heard one yelling? That might be. Sighing, she thought to herself, ‘Better add his name to the list of people I’ve put in danger today’.
She glanced up at Smile and shrugged. “No, he must be really upset about something…” she said softly. He usually was that dramatic, but she didn’t want to offend him, especially after hurting him so badly. Surrendering to the task of cleaning the glass away, she returned back to her chair and eased back down.
She hadn’t been sitting there for more than a minute when the door swung open. In strode her step-mother, looking a bit bigger since her pregnancy was starting to show. She was looking no less furious than usual, though, as her eyes fell upon Sabrina.
“You ungrateful little brat!” she said furiously, walking until she was right in front of Sabrina. She pointed her finger right at Sabrina’s face, where it was mere millimeters in front of Sabrina’s nose. “Do you have any idea what trouble this has caused your father? You will spend the rest of your days locked in that room if I have anything to say about it!”
“That’s so unfair!” squeaked Sabrina. “I didn’t mean for any of this to happen!”
“Before you say anything else, girl, just think,” said the woman seriously. “I might just be the one who’s taking care of you, and I don’t feel any guilt whatsoever of letting you starve!”

“No, he must be really upset about something…”
“Yeah? Probably something petty.” Smile muttered, solemnly gazing off into the distance. No matter how much he usually disagreed with Adrasteia he had to admit that the man’s words rang with some truth. If Sabrina hadn’t met him perhaps she –
At this point in his contemplations he was abruptly knocked off his train of thought for the entrance of a rather plump woman. How on earth she found them was a mystery but he supposed that she probably had some connection with the estate’s young heir. Oh the company that child chose to keep!
She was, to say the least, certainly as rude and insensitive as the young master was. He wasn’t particularly interested in her plethora of threats and condescending words but “ungrateful little brat” definitely caught his attention. That…and the threats of starvation and imprisonment. Just what justification did this overweight creature think she had for imposing such horrid things on the delicate Sabrina?
Practically leaping out of bed, Smile took his stand protectively in front of Sabrina, one hand reaching into his pocket (out of simple habit) for the dagger that wasn’t there as he stated. “Oh, bullying an innocent maiden are you? That isn’t exactly what I would call refined behavior. Who are you and just what right do you think you have for saying such distasteful things? Are you her nanny? Well, I’ll tell you what! I consider it my personal responsibility to protect Sabrina and I will not tolerate anyone beleaguering her like this!”
Of course, at the sound of such commotion Adrasteia had abandoned his chase for the rambunctious Veritas heir in order to return to the room. This sight which greeted him was…really he wasn’t sure whether to categorize it as amusing or plainly shocking! Half-obscured behind the now quite voluminous form of Mrs. Matthews the butler simply said, “Imbecile, you have no idea who it is you are addressing, do you?”

Looking shocked and angry, the woman gave Smile a vicious glare. “I am her step-mother,” she said, seething. “And what are you supposed to be? Some kind of imitation pirate?” She nearly stabbed him in the eye with her finger by pointing at his eye patch.
She looked back at Adrasteia and scoffed. “See? Even the servant has more manners than you do!” Rolling her eyes and pushing Smile aside, she advanced on Sabrina. “Come, let’s go! Your father wants a few words with you!”
“No!” said Sabrina back, her eyes filling with a couple tears as they contracted into a glare. It seemed that she’d had enough of her friends being hurt. “First of all, Smile has more character in one hair than you do in that whole blackened thing that serves as your heart! And secondly, Adrasteia is more than a servant! He’s done a better job watching out for me than you ever have!”
Steam was practically blowing out her ears as she listened to Sabrina’s insubordination. “Come here, you little brat!” She lunged forward, seizing Sabrina by her bandaged wrist. Ignoring the girl’s cries of pain, she pulled her to the door. She shot one more glance back at the two men in the room which said, ‘I dare one of you to try and stop me,’ before walking out.
It wasn’t long before they were home, and Sabrina was being towed to the servant’s quarters. “I will sooner kill myself than allow you to see the outside of this room!” With that, she shoved Sabrina into the windowless, dusty room and slammed the door. Sabrina could hear the lock close behind her.
Sighing, Sabrina laid down on the old, thin mattress and curled up with the pillow to her face. Her new accommodations were dismal enough without the fact of being locked in the room.
Meanwhile, Sabrina’s father was hearing about what his daughter had said. He had no idea what had gotten in to her, and had no idea what to do about it. He figured that it was fair to keep her locked up there, since it would take so much damage control to right the idea that he was somehow affiliated with ruthless mobsters.
However, he wasn’t going to be completely heartless. He already begun thinking about who was to watch Sabrina. He didn’t want to trust his wife to care for her – he was pretty sure there was substance to the threat of letting the poor girl starve there.

That obnoxious old hag! If it hadn’t been for the equally insufferable butler holding him back Smile would have happily accepted her challenge and given her one hearty punch to the face! Oh the indignity of it all! If there was one thing Smile despised above all else it was to be perceived as a coward, especially in the mind of some indiscriminate woman.
Thus it was that the mobster remained atypically quiet for the duration of the car journey, not even muttering to himself as the picturesque scenery passed in a haze. At length, upon their arrival at the Matthews’ estate (some time after Sabrina), this awkward silence prompted a rather unexpected inquiry from Adrasteia, although it was a mere “What?”
Admittedly, it was a poor conversation starter, an exceedingly poor one in fact! However, to be fair on the butler it was also an unprecedented attempt. For Adrasteia to want to talk to the (former) mobster at all was…rather abnormal behavior.
Unsurprisingly, given Smile current irked state of mind, the effort went unappreciated, completely ignored in fact. What happened instead was that Smile trudged around to the side of the house, picked up a hefty-looking statue and almost tossed it through the nearest window.
Thank goodness Adrasteia was there to stop him from delivering such damage! Hurriedly placing a hand on the statue, the butler glared at the mobster, a stern expression on his face as he said, rather bluntly, “Normal people know how to use a door.”
So it was that both found themselves at the front door, Smile fiddling anxiously with the cuff of his coat (after all, that lady could be torturing Sabrina as he stupidly waited for someone, anyone, to answer the door) as Adrasteia rang the bell (his mind wandering back to whether it had been advisable to leave Memini unattended. Oh yes, the mansion better NOT have burnt to the ground when he returned).

Mr. Matthews was pulled out of his thoughts by the doorbell ringing. He was almost afraid to go to the door, thinking it might be a reporter or some gossip-hungry businessman. But, worried that it might be important, he walked to the door.
The sight he came upon was quite peculiar. Adrasteia and the mobster who kidnapped Sabrina repeatedly were standing by the door, looking anxious. Opening the door, he looked at them both with a confused look on his face. “Adrasteia,” he said sharply. “What are you doing, bringing him here? What if he tries to kidnap Sabrina again?”
It was obvious that he wasn’t thrilled with having the ex-mobster anywhere near Sabrina or Mrs. Matthews. However, just then, a news crew pulled up in their circle driveway. With an exasperated sigh, he waved them inside. “Get in here. Come, come!” When they were inside, he slammed the front door and locked it, then pulled the shades.
“So, go on,” he said seriously. “What are you two here for? I thought better of you, Adrasteia, than to bring him here.” He walked away from the windows, just in case the news people could somehow see through the curtains.
However, this brought them close enough to Sabrina’s new room, since it was packed just underneath the grand staircase, packed right next to the stairs leading to the basement. Sabrina heard voices and stopped crying into that dusty pillow.
Getting up, she walked to the door of her little room. “Hello?” she called, pounding on the door. “Dad?” She was hoping that he would speak to her soon. She hadn’t gotten a chance to explain herself since the incident at school.
Hurriedly, Mr. Matthews slammed the door, closing off the hallway leading to Sabrina’s room. “Well, out with it!” he said, trying to distract Smile from knowing Sabrina’s location. “What are you here for?”

“Adrasteia,” Mr. Matthews said sharply. “What are you doing, bringing him here? What if he tries to kidnap Sabrina again?”
At this the butler blushed, gazing down in shame as he mentally weighed the pros and cons of his decision to transport the ex-mobster here. Of course Mr. Matthews was right! In his haste to ascertain that Sabrina was okay Adrasteia hadn’t really thought of the consequences of bringing Smile along. Oh how could he have been such an idiot! “My apologies, sir. I wasn’t thinking clearly. Allow me to remedy my error by immediately taking him home. I –“
However, before he could finish his apology they were both ushered into the mansion with a brisk “Get in here. Come, come!” on the part of Mr. Matthews. Why the sudden change in attitude? Was it ‘let’s all confuse Adrasteia’ day?
But, oh, Mr. Matthews wasn’t quite finished with him yet!
“So, go on,” the Master of the house said seriously. “What are you two here for? I thought better of you, Adrasteia, than to bring him here.”
Honestly, he had thought better of himself too. What on earth had convinced him to bring Smile here he could neither remember nor fathom. It was a complete mystery! Staring at the tiles for the interim, Adrasteia again offered his sincere apologies, “My apologies, sir. I take full responsibility for my mistake. I –“
“What was that?” This time the interruption came from Smile. There had been, apparently, some sort of noise that had caught his attention and since the former criminal had no intention of offering an apology he had been busy scrutinizing the interior for signs of his damsel in distress. That hasty slamming of the door was becoming increasingly suspicious in his mind.
“Well, out with it! What are you here for?”
“Well, sir, I’m here to salvage my princess from the clutches of an evil witch and –“
“Smile, you do NOT refer to the lady of the house that way!” Adrasteia snapped, attempting to apologize once more, “I apologize on behalf of –“
As was to be expected, his words were cut off again by the unrepentant Smile continuing his utterance from earlier, “and I would greatly appreciate it if you kindly showed me where you’re keeping her.”
Once finished, that sentence trailed into silence…a tense silence. Adrasteia seriously appeared on the verge of strangling that ex-criminal for his imprudent words.

When Smile addressed his wife as a witch, Mr. Matthews frowned and folded his arms. “You must be whatever is influencing Sabrina to act so horribly lately!” He glared at Smile, looking positively furious.
Without saying anything else to the ex-mobster, he looked to Adrasteia. “I suppose that it doesn’t matter now, ol’ boy,” he sighed. “He already knows where we live.” He shot a disapproving look at Smile. “Though I would have preferred that he stay away from my family.”
He considered the thought for a minute. How to get them to leave? Smile seemed determined (or obsessed) enough to stay until he was sure Sabrina was alright. Right then, such a clever idea popped into his head. Hiding a grin, he spoke up.
“Well, I’m not sure she’ll want to speak to you right now,” he sighed. “You’ve gotten her in a lot of trouble today. She might not even want to see you.” He glanced up the stairs. “I’ll go see her about it, though.”
And so he walked up the stairs, away from where she really was, to where she was when Smile broke in earlier that day. After a few moments of walking there, he spoke up loudly, saying, presumably to Sabrina. “Adrasteia and that mobster are here? Do you want to speak with them?”
He left a pause, as if waiting for a reply. “Fine, I’ll tell them that you don’t want to see them.” Then he began walking back, which would take another couple of moments.
While he was gone, though, Sabrina had begun to pound on the door with her good hand. She’d heard a door slam, but she still heard voices outside. “HELLO?!” she yelled. “Daddy? Adrasteia? Smile?” She paced in front of the door like a caged animal, praying for a response.
“Come on, I know you’re out there! Let me out! I’m desperate!” she added in a yell.

“You must be whatever is influencing Sabrina to act so horribly lately!”
Although that derogatory accusation was directed at Smile, Adrasteia was more affected than the mobster was. Why? Well, if he logically thought about the whole sequence of events that led to this current point in time…Well, Sabrina simply wouldn’t even have met the distasteful character if Adrasteia had properly watched over her. Oh, if only he had properly watched over her!
“I suppose that it doesn’t matter now, ol’ boy,” Mr. Matthews sighed. “He already knows where we live.” He shot a disapproving look at Smile. “Though I would have preferred that he stay away from my family.”
Despite the fact that Mr. Matthews appeared to be talking about him as though he wasn’t there, Smile appeared unaware of (or simply not bothered by) this. Truth be told, the way he was glancing about suspiciously was proof enough that his mind was elsewhere altogether.
“Sabrina? Sabrina?” Was whispered periodically into each and every conceivable crack and crevice; if Mr. Matthews’ and Adrasteia’s conversation wasn’t so effective in hiding that subtle whisper they may have stared at him as if he were some deranged mental case!
“Well, I’m not sure she’ll want to speak to you right now. You’ve gotten her in a lot of trouble today. She might not even want to see you.”
The unanticipated sound of Mr. Matthews directly addressing him practically made Smile jump out of his skin as he swiftly swiveled around to face the man; his expression akin to a young child having been caught stealing a chocolate cookie. Why on earth was he feeling so jumpy? It wasn’t like he was doing something forbidden by seeking out Sabrina, was he?
“Er…thank you…sir.” Smile quickly stammered out, glancing over at the door Mr. Matthews had slammed shut earlier. He was fully expecting the man to stride over there now but to his surprise Mr. Matthews’ ascended the stairway instead. Now that was strange…particularly since he was sure he heard…could still hear, a muted voice coming from beyond that closed door. Shifting his focus to this noise he failed to hear Mr. Matthews’ cover-up story and had even been on the verge of attempting a break-in when he felt Adrasteia’s hand on his shoulder.
“Come on, let’s go. Since she doesn’t want to see you we should go before you create anymore trouble.”
“What do you mean she doesn’t want to see me? That’s ludicrous! Now stand aside whilst I –“
“Do I have to drag you?”
Such an icy-cold voice! The grip had also tightened into a vice; what was this weird inkling that told Smile Adrasteia would really have preferred for his hand to be around his neck? He didn’t have to turn around to guess what expression was on the butler’s. The mere presence of the man behind him was beginning to send chills down his spine.
Oh well, in these types of situations where the person behind you has every intention of killing you there is only one thing you can do; take him by surprise before he can do the same to you!
Thus it was that Adrasteia found himself hurled through the formerly closed door (now rammed open by such sudden force) before he could even react. Furious, he struggled to contain his rage as he got to his feet and made an effort to compose himself. Violence was not civilized behavior and he didn’t want to disappoint Mr. Matthews more than he already had…regardless of how ridiculously tempting it was to punch that smug smile right off of that thug’s face.
Dammit! That thing was really getting on his nerves! Rolling up his sleeves, Adrasteia (feigning coolness) voiced, “Mr. Matthews, sir, may I request your permission to…show this felon what happens to a disrespectful guest who overstays his welcome? I would not want him to think his is an acceptable mode of conduct.”

As Mr. Matthews strode back to his unwelcomed guests, he heard raised voices. He sped up, worried that they would get into trouble, when he heard a crash and a loud thud. He ran, now, to the top of the stairs where he saw Smile looking like he'd just thrown something, and Adrasteia was nowhere in sight.
"What on earth do you think you're doing?" he shouted, storming down the steps to see the doorway between the two grand staircases had been smashed through. "You can't just show up to someone's house, insult his wife, and then destroy his property!" His face reddened to a deep shade of maroon.
“Mr. Matthews, sir, may I request your permission to…show this felon what happens to a disrespectful guest who overstays his welcome? I would not want him to think his is an acceptable mode of conduct.”
John, still looking furious (and a hint jealous of Adrasteia for asking first to show the mobster some manners) nodded his head. "Please do. I regret not jumping on that opportunity first." Shooting an acidic look at Smile, he stepped back, allowing the two men to have room for their fight.
Meanwhile, Sabrina had heard the crash and was now acting frantic, having no idea what was happening outside. This had to be the mafia now. There's no way it could be anyone else! They'd come to kill her for sure.
She ran around the cramped little room, searching desperately for a place to hide. Horrible thoughts ran through her head about what they would do when they caught her. Stories she'd heard on the news and seen in those moving picture shows all rushed back to her memory, fueling her fear.
Finding no better hiding spot, she dove under the bed amongst the empty boxes and dirty, unkempt carpet. She shoved an empty box of cardboard between her and the door, so if anyone came in it would look to be simply an empty room.
She reached around, searching for a weapon of any kind to use in case those mobsters looked around and discovered her there. She settled for a long mattress spring that had fallen, though it wouldn't do much good. However, she clutched that little piece of metal as if it were life itself, and waited for someone to force the door open.

Meanwhile, back at the mansion, Memini had somehow locked himself into an exceedingly dim closet filled with glass bottles labeled with unfamiliar brand names. Shrugging off his doubts (and too bored for his own good) the mischievous lad attempted to get at the swirling liquid within, tugging in earnest at the stopper with his teeth.
-
¡°What? So you¡¯re just going to attack an injured man?¡± Smile smirked, cocky despite his evident handicap. Perhaps as the result of his close brush with death the man was, by now, significantly more confident than he should have been, far more than was reasonable to be. Reaching into his pocket by force of habit Smile fiddled around for the familiar texture of his dagger. Remembering that it was gone (possibly forever) he couldn¡¯t help but frown in disappointment. He was really more accustomed to fighting with a weapon than fighting unarmed.
Noticing this change in expression Adrasteia laughed, ¡°Ha! No unfair disadvantage for you today eh? Good, I¡¯m going to enjoy this!¡±
Thus it was that Smile was quite literally faced with the power of Adrasteia¡¯s fist! Now, that was quite a simple technique and might have, under normal circumstances, been dodged, but Smile¡¯s impaired sight was giving him a rather irksome handicap. He just could not judge the distance and direction of that punch accurately enough!
So it was that the formerly formidable fighter barely had the time to bring his hands up to protect his face as he was sent hurtling straight though Sabrina¡¯s wooden door. Striding in after his fallen victim, Adrasteia gazed upon his prey (who was gasping for breath on the floor) with a malevolent grin. ¡®Oh, I am so gonna enjoy this!¡¯ he thought.
